If you are a fan of fancy dress, Halloween must seem a long time away now, and there aren’t many other occasions to get dressed up for a few months, unless your birthday is coming up. Well, why not making your own occasion and organise a fancy dress Christmas party? Everyone loves a Christmas party and adding a theme to yours will make it an even bigger event in the festive season calendar.

A theme related to Christmas

Of course, a good party needs to have a theme somehow related to the occasion. Therefore, you need to choose a theme related to Christmas. You can of course stick to Christmas as a theme, but you could make it even more interesting by choosing a theme such as Christmas movies, Christmas tree decorations, Christmas around the World, Lapland…

Decorate the place of the party accordingly to your theme without forgetting a tree of course! If you want your guests to interact, you can plan some games around Christmas, such as a trivia for example. You could also make this a real Christmas moment by asking to each guest to bring a small present that would be put under the tree and later given to someone else. And don’t forget some party food and Christmas cakes.

Zombie Walk

For the past 6 years Brighton has been hosting the famous Zombie walk. It attracts thousands of people each year and encourages participants to dress up in all sorts of scary costumes. The walk takes place a few weekends before Halloween. Every year the parade of Zombies slowly stroll from Brighton’s Old Paddling pool (by the West pier) to Concord 2.

Quick tips for being the scariest Zombie this Halloween:

Apply white face paint or baby powder to make you look colourless and dull. Wear eye makeup i.e. Eyeliner or Eye Shadow to make your eyes look dark and worn out.
Use fake blood and Eyeliner to replicate cuts and saws on your face.
Mess up your hair and use some hairspray to keep it that way. Helps to give off the impression that you’ve just climbed out of a grave.
Finally cut up old clothes and cover them in fake blood and dirt. This is a good way to perfect your zombie look.

Now you’re all set for your Zombie costume whatever you’re doing this Halloween whether you’re participating in the walk or just dressing up!

The Best Fancy Dress for Stag Weekends

There are many times when it feels utterly ridiculous for a guy to dress up in fancy dress. Many even avoid going to much effort at a fancy dress party! But there’s one occasion where they just can’t help themselves; their stag weekend!

When the lads are battling through their heavy weekend before they lose their mate to marriage, they usually stay together as a unit. That means they will all be dressing up together, as a team, ready to take on the challenges that wait ahead.

I’ve noticed these are increasingly becoming popular fancy dress themes for stag weekends:

The Mankini
The mankini was made famous by Sacha Baron Cohen’s spoof Kazakh reporter, Borat. This has proved to be a very popular costume with many men; no matter how manly they say they are.

Although this seems to be a ridiculous outfit for most blokes, it’s almost perfect for a stag do. It’s certainly something you wouldn’t be wearing around the house (or is it?!).

Smurfs
Sometimes nothing says ‘team bonding’ more than when all the lads are rubbing blue body paint on each other. This costume never particularly pleases the owners of wherever you’re staying – especially with those ‘Daz white’ sheets- but I’m sure they’ve seen much worse. Sometimes Hen weekends can get pretty wild, as described in this article.

Little Britain
There are many characters from the sketch show that you can dress up as; Daffyd, Lou & Andy, Emily Howard, Vicky Pollard, Marjorie Dawes and many more. These characters are exaggerated parodies of the British.

The best thing about a Little Britain theme is that there’s enough variety; you could make it even more interesting by getting each guy to pull a characters’ names out of a hat- one of you could end up being pushed around on a wheelchair all day, which I guess wouldn’t be that bad with the amount of alcohol consumption!

Priests / Nuns
This is a fairly common costume for stag weekends- although you should be wary when visiting foreign locations; different cultures could take offense much easier than perhaps in the UK..

Do you like to dress up and have fun? If you are fed up of spending the weekends doing the same old thing; going out to the same pubs, meeting the same people there… make something different happen! A great idea is to convince all of your mates to spend an unusual weekend… How to do it? Create a themed party!!

For that, you have to think of something you have never done before. For example, find out more about a specific culture. For this occasion, Google on the Internet Japan: aspects related to the Japanese culture such as decoration, gastronomy and clothes.

Decoration

It is really important that you create the perfect atmosphere for the room in which the party is going to take place. Although most of the Japanese dining rooms are diaphanous, very tidy and with not so many ornaments, we must exaggerate and place some identifying stuff.

We are going to hang some paper colour lanterns from the ceiling pasted from one side to the room to the other. Then we will buy 2 or 3 bonsais - maybe you know that they are a bit expensive so it doesn’t matter if you get plastic bonsais. We will place some bamboo sticks into glass jars in every corner of the room, and finally we will paste some posters with Japanese words on the walls.

In the middle of the room will be place a table– if it’s a low table it’s much better, if not it doesn’t matter – with some cushions (depending the number of people) around it. All of this needs to be accompanied by some traditional music.

Gastronomy

The most typical Japanese dish is Sushi. Do you not know how to make it? Don’t worry, I have found a very good article in which you will learn how to cook it.

Other dishes are Tempura– battered and deep-fried vegetables or seafood, Sashimi– fresh raw fish or meat sliced into thin pieces served with a sauce, or Tonkatsu – deep-fried pork cutlets served with cabbage. Another possibility is to buy take-away Japanese food which without doubt is the safest option.

For the drinks, buy a bottle or some bottles of Sake – rice liquor – and Syou-chû – wheat or potato liquor. There are some refreshing Japanese beers like Sapporo or Ashasi as well, which are all other great options.

Clothes

It’s very easy to dress up as the Japanese. The typical clothes are a kimono held with a belt. Girls should put her hair up in a bun and makeup their face in white and red lips. But if you do not like the traditions and you want to be different, you just have to investigate more about Manga characters and find a funny custom.

And… Here you have your party ready!!

They are always a very good option and will make you feel like the most successful of your friends and maybe you might have the opportunity to save a beautiful woman…

Here’s our guide to the good, the brave and the brash of fancy dress options for your hen party.

If you are expecting everyone to bring along their sexy fancy dress, learner plates or best 80’s outfit, do remember to give them plenty of notice that the party will be fancy dress and you are expecting them to play ball. The Good

Simple coordinating of colours works well. If everyone wears black and the bride white she’ll feel special and stand out all night. Or you could all dress in her favourite color.

The bold

Hit the dance floors with a D-I-S-C-O theme – you will need kinky afros, heavy makeup, large glasses, sequins aplenty, flares and impossible platforms to really be the dancing queens. Cheesy but easy.
Give it some sass with a 1920’s flapper theme. This vintage look allows you to have fun and look sexy. Think Catherine Zeta Jones in Chicago and wear short skirts, bobbed wigs, strong dark make up and party hard just like the original flappers.

The brash

What can be brasher than a French Maid’s outfit? Dark nylons, a little black dress finished off with a white pinny over it and if you really want to excite the boys, a feather duster to clean them down.

For a summer’s night that you will never forget why not say “aloha” to Hawaii for your theme. Weather and your bottle permitting you could be having a night out dressed in only bikinis, grass skirts and flower garlands to preserve your modesty. Ukuleles are optional.

MAKE UP FOR A CLOWN

If you are thinking of dressing up as a clown for your next costume party, you have to take into account some advice to care for your skin and try to choose the best face paint.

There are two different types of make-up. One is water based make-up and the other one is oil based make-up. Depending on which type of skin you have, it will be better for you one or the other. Apart from skin type, it may be better to use oil based make-up as the water based make-up will run off your face if you sweat a little bit.

Steps to follow when applying make-up:

Spread a protective cream over your face

Start step by step, firstly apply the white base over your your face.

Adding colour and design. This is where your imagination and your preferences start. Crayons are really useful to draw the outline of the areas and then spread colours into the pictures.

If you are going to be a happy and wonderful clown use colours like red, pink and yellow. If you are going to be a sad clown think of browns, blues, blacks and greys

The final step. Don’t forget that you have to remove all of your make-up at the end of the day. Cooking oil is very useful in these cases, and it works really well.

It’s the most typical fancy dress at Christmas time. This lovely man is part of a magical illusion every year, giving children presents on Christmas day.

You will probably see him, smilling broadly at shopping centres, markets and other meeting points. Jolly and fat, parents go with their children to see him and tell him what they would like for Christmas.

We don’t know any other singers that dress like Lady Gaga, maybe Madonna in her youngers years used to dress a little bit weird, but not in the same way that Lady Gaga does.

Nowadays, singers must impress the public to sell more copies of their music compositions, due to an intense rivalry between bands and single singers. In the case of Lady Gaga it’s an amazing and really weird case, she used to dress with “normal” clothes that look like costumes and fancy dress.

You can find a large gallery of her most famous pictures here. Some of them surprise you in a good way, and provide you with ideas for your future parties.

We can say of her that she is a theatrical dance-pop performer and she likes to be the centre of attention, this is the reason she dresses like we’re in Carnival.
